SHAKESPEARE SCHOLAR OFFERS INSIGHT INTO KING LEAR

A unique lecture offering an insight into Shakespeare’s King Lear is being held ahead of the production at this year’s Much Wenlock Festival.

Delivered by Dr Chris Meads the one off event entitled ‘A Fool’s Errand: A Journey into King Lear’ is to take place at The Edge Theatre, Much Wenlock on Thursday 10 June. Intended as an introduction to the bleak and violent Jacobean tragedy, it will begin by considering the nature of tragedy itself then proceed to look closely at the historical elements relevant to an understanding of the play. The difficulties of establishing the text itself, and the play's changing fortunes over the centuries will also be discussed.

Dr Meads, who has lived in Shropshire for over 20 years, originally moved to the West Midlands to undertake postgraduate research at Birmingham University's Shakespeare Institute. He is now Senior Lecturer in English & Literary Studies at University College Worcester and was recently Visiting Professor in English Literature at The College of New Jersey, in the USA. His publications include the anthology Elizabethan Humour, a monograph Banquets Set Forth, and an essay in Medieval and Renaissance Drama in England.

Admission is £5 and the lecture starts at 7.30pm on 10 June. For more information, contact The Edge Theatre 01952 728509.
