Tickets are now on sale and rehearsals well under way for Shropshire Drama Company’s (SDC) next production - Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge – due to take place early in 2009.

Directed by Rosalind Garrard, the performance will take place at two new venues for SDC – Concord College, near Shrewsbury and Ellesmere College in north Shropshire.

Set in 1955 Brooklyn, the story centres on an Italian-American family - Eddie Carbone, a longshoreman working on the docks in Red Hook, his wife Beatrice and their niece Catherine. When Beatrice's impoverished Sicilian cousins come to stay, having entered the US illegally in the hope of finding work, the family unit is disturbed and ultimately torn apart.

Talking about the play and Arthur Miller Rosalind Garrard said: “Although set in 1950s' New York among immigrant Italians, the themes of the play are universal. There are similarities with Greek tragedy as well as issues that have relevance today. Miller believed that ‘plays are written on the assumption that they will be acted before an audience’. A View from the Bridge is a truly great twentieth century play that deserves performance and we aim to do it justice!”

Booking details and tickets for A View from the Bridge (Concord College – 30 and 31 January; Ellesmere College 06 and 07 February) are available to view online at SDC’s website www.shropshiredramacompany.co.uk.
